What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint. It creates a sun-kissed natural looking hair colour not unlike children’s hair or sunkissed locks after a holiday. The idea of balayage is usually that ‘less is more’ so we create soft, natural looks. What’s The Difference Between Balayage & Ombré?
Balayage hair colour is more subtle than ombré, with a few sections of highlights added through your roots, giving a denser colour towards the tips of your hair. By contrast, ombré is a more defined two-tone effect, with darker roots becoming lighter towards the ends.
How Are Balayage Highlights Applied At Cheynes Salons In Edinburgh?
The balayage colour is often hand painted into your hair, although foils can also be used. We apply your chosen colour finely closer to the roots, building up the colour so it becomes bolder towards the ends of the hair. Balayage require very little maintenance. It grows out beautifully and more naturally so you don’t get an obvious regrowth line and can wear it for longer between appointments. All you really need to do is protect it as you would any other colour: use a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner, regular treatments and heat protection when styling.

Should I Get Highlights Or Balayage?
There are subtle differences between highlights, lowlights and balayage but they are all very popular hair services at our top salons in Edinburgh, adding interest to any hairstyle and colour.
Many people assume that highlights have to be blonde but they can, in fact, be any colour as long as they are lighter than your base or natural hair colour. Similarly, lowlights can be any colour but will tend to be darker than your base colour.
We add highlights by carefully selecting tiny sections of hair that you want lightened and placing them into foils. The hair colour is added onto the strands within the foils and the colour is left to ‘develop’. Your colourist will check regularly to ensure that the highlights reach the desired shade before washing off the colour mixture.
With highlights and lowlights, the hair colour is added evenly from root to tip. You can also choose between a full head of highlights, 3/4 or 1/2 head of highlights or a T-section covering your root regrowth.
As already mentioned, balayage ‘highlights’ are usually hand-painted onto the hair to give a less uniformed look. Your colour master can blend shades and will usually leave the root area with fewer highlights so it appears slightly darker and more natural-looking.
Is Root Stretching Another Name For Balayage?
Yes. Root stretching is a type of balayage where colour is applied so the roots look stretched. This means you do not get a hard root regrowth line but a more subtle blend of colours with a few fine highlights through the roots, growing lighter toward the ends.
