The Dutch Braid

BRAIDS & PLAITS, best hair salons in EdinburghDutch braids are easy to do yourself and look amazing once completed. Firstly, simply brush your hair free of knots before parting into three even, clean sections. Adding some hairspray or styling product helps to keep stray hairs at bay.

Then, cross the right section under the middle section of hair, then cross the left section under the new middle section. Repeat the process by adding thin sections of hair from left to right. Remember to make sure you cross the hair under not over to achieve the best Dutch Braid.

Keeping up to date with the latest hairstyling trends and techniques is very important to us here at Hair & Beauty Salons in Edinburgh. The Braided Headband

BRAIDS & PLAITS, best hair salons in EdinburghAre you tired of trying to find headbands that match your outfit? Well, look no further, because the perfect hairband that goes with every outfit is already on your head! Wow your friends by using your own hair as a funky braided headband. This plaited look works on short, medium and long hair and is the perfect style to wear half up and half down.

First, you will need freshly washed hair (but damp or dry hair will also work). Then, section a large piece of hair from your crown to behind your ears. After this you will need to separate the hair into three equal strands before then crossing the left section over the middle section, and then the right section over the new middle section. Keep on using this plaiting technique until you run out of hair. Finally, secure your braid with a hair tie and pin the end of the plaited ponytail behind your ear with a bobby pin.

Want a thicker and flatter braid? Use the ‘pancake technique’ where you gently pull at the sections of the plait to loosen it which will make it flat like a pancake!

Fishtail Plaits

BRAIDS & PLAITS, best hair salons in EdinburghAre you in the mood for something sleek and smooth? Or would you rather a tousled, chunky bo-ho look? Well, fishtail plaits can do both! But, if this is your first time trying to create a fishtail braid then maybe try with a side ponytail to start.

Firstly, split your hair into two smooth, equal parts before creating a much smaller third section from the outside of the ponytail. Now pull the small section across the top of the larger section from left to right. Then, you will need to repeat this process from right to left.

Repeat these steps until you run out of hair. Finally, secure your plait with a hair tie and spritz with a finishing product to keep it in place. Don’t worry if your plait looks messy or tousled this creates a gorgeous relaxed plaited look!

Top Tips to Keep Your Plaits & Braids Looking Perfect

Plaits and braids have an annoying habit of becoming loose throughout the day, but this can work in your favour and create a charming look. However, if you would rather your hairstyle stay put, then follow these top tips to stop your plaits from misbehaving…

·         Put styling products in your hair to make it easier to grip – such as hairspray or dry shampoo.

·         Smaller sections of hair mean a tighter plait. So, if you want a chunky plait, use thicker sections.

·         Plait your hair tightly in the morning and then unravel later on in the day for perfect beach babe waves.

·         Hair accessories hide any pins or hair ties in your braid that you don’t want to be seen.

·         Next time you come into our Edinburgh hair salons, ask your stylist for top tips and recommended products to get your hair in the best shape possible for perfect plaits.
