What Is A Skin Test & Why Do I Need One?

balayage, hair colour, cheynes hair salons, edinburghOur hair colour services are available to women and men aged 16 and over.

You must come in for a simple skin test at least 48 hours before your colour appointment to test for allergies.

This only takes a few seconds so there's no need to book in for this, but we will not colour your hair without a record of a skin test. We will just dab a small amount of colour behind your eye which you wipe away after 30 minutes.

Then we can go ahead with your hair colour if you have had no reaction within 48 hours!

If you suffer from skin sensitivities, then please let us know so we can recommend a different colour range that may be more suited to you.

Should I Choose Temporary or Permanent Hair Colour?

balayage, hair colour, cheynes hair salons, edinburghTemporary Hair Colour - When colouring your hair for the first time, it might be best to start off with a temporary hair dye which will wash out after a few shampoos. However, you can only go darker with temporary hair colour. To lighten your hair, you will need to use semi-permanent or permanent dye.

Semi-Permanent Hair Colour - With a semi-permanent shade you can achieve a longer-lasting colour that temporary hair colour. This is perfect for covering grey hairs or to subtly enhance your natural hair colour.

Permanent Hair Colour - As the name suggests, your colour will be permanent if you choose to use this. Permanent hair dye lifts the cuticles along the hair shaft and deposits the colour deeper within each hair strand. As this is permanent, you will need to get your roots re-touched every eight weeks.

How To Care For Coloured Hair

green hair colour, cheynes hair salons, edinburgh city centreOnce you've had your hair coloured, you will need to continue to take care of it to keep it vibrant and glossy.
We can add specialist treatments during the hair colouring process to protect your hair from damage. This will result in stronger, healthier-feeling hair that holds its colour longer.

For lightened hair, we recommend using something called a silver shampoo which actually comes in a purple shade! This keeps your hair looking fresh and vibrant while neutralising brassy or orange tones.

If you have brown or darker hair colours we can recommend the right hair care products suited to your hair colour, type and texture.

So, although the hair colour care starts in the salon, it's up to you to keep it up once you leave.
