Hints & Tips for First Time Hair Colour Clients at Cheynes Hair Salons in Edinburgh
Bored of mousey hair colour? Feel your natural red hair needs a new lease of life? Want to cover up a few grey hairs?
We know it can be daunting to colour your hair for the first time. But don’t worry, we’ve written this article to calm your concerns about colouring hair for the first time!
What Is A Skin Test & Why Do I Need One?
Our hair colour services are available to women and men aged 16 and over.
You must come in for a simple skin test at least 48 hours before your colour appointment to test for allergies.
This only takes a few seconds so there’s no need to book in for this, but we will not colour your hair without a record of a skin test. We will just dab a small amount of colour behind your eye which you wipe away after 30 minutes.
Then we can go ahead with your hair colour if you have had no reaction within 48 hours!
If you suffer from skin sensitivities, then please let us know so we can recommend a different colour range that may be more suited to you.
Which Hair Colour Will Suit Me?
There are so many reasons why people decide to colour their hair.
Whether you want to try an exciting new hair colour, fancy boosting your natural shade, or just have to cover up those pesky grey hairs, we can help find the perfect shade for you.
This is why we recommend you book in for a complimentary hair colour consultation with one of our Cheynes Hairdressing colour experts before your appointment.
You can contact your local Cheynes salon using the contact buttons at the bottom of this page.
Fashion Hair Shades – Bright Colours & Pastels
Want to make a big statement with your hair colour? Then fashion hair colour is for you! Everyone’s doing it, so now it’s your turn – no matter what your age or gender.
If you want to turn heads, try a beautiful, vibrant hair colour. We have every colour you can think of – from bright blues to mint greens, pastel pinks to sunset corals. These colours can be used alone or together to create your own unique colour combination!
Natural-Looking Hair Colouring – Balayage
If you prefer something more natural, then consider having balayage.
This is a hand-painted technique where colour is painted onto different sections of the hair.
It creates instant brightness, from dark roots to lighter ends of the hair, leaving you looking like a natural goddess.
Boost Your Natural Hair Colour & Hide Grey Hair
For those of you who love your natural hair colour but want it to look more interesting, consider highlights, lowlights or balayage.
Our hair colourists have the expertise to find the shade or shades that will suit you.
Highlights or lowlights are also perfect for blending first grey hairs into your natural colour.
Should I Choose Temporary or Permanent Hair Colour?
Temporary Hair Colour – When colouring your hair for the first time, it might be best to start off with a temporary hair dye which will wash out after a few shampoos. However, you can only go darker with temporary hair colour. To lighten your hair, you will need to use semi-permanent or permanent dye.
Semi-Permanent Hair Colour – With a semi-permanent shade you can achieve a longer-lasting colour that temporary hair colour. This is perfect for covering grey hairs or to subtly enhance your natural hair colour.
Permanent Hair Colour – As the name suggests, your colour will be permanent if you choose to use this. Permanent hair dye lifts the cuticles along the hair shaft and deposits the colour deeper within each hair strand. As this is permanent, you will need to get your roots re-touched every eight weeks.
How To Care For Coloured Hair
Once you’ve had your hair coloured, you will need to continue to take care of it to keep it vibrant and glossy.
We can add specialist treatments during the hair colouring process to protect your hair from damage. This will result in stronger, healthier-feeling hair that holds its colour longer.
For lightened hair, we recommend using something called a silver shampoo which actually comes in a purple shade! This keeps your hair looking fresh and vibrant while neutralising brassy or orange tones.
If you have brown or darker hair colours we can recommend the right hair care products suited to your hair colour, type and texture.
So, although the hair colour care starts in the salon, it’s up to you to keep it up once you leave.
